I am planning on making a tier cake for a birthday out of sponge, so i was wondering if anyone has a good plain sponge recipe that means the bottom cake will be strong enough to support the two layers on top.
also, i plan on making each layer look like a present, what is the best way to do this? haven't been able to find any good websites... :(Cake making and decorating, any good sponge recipes and tips?
try going to www.thinkwedding.com and you can get some ideas from there..Cake making and decorating, any good sponge recipes and tips?
I don't have a sponge cake recipe.
But, I can tell you the simplest thing to do with the decorating would be to use fondant. It will create a smooth uniform appearance, and will still be sweet like icing. It can be moulded into different shapes, and will ';harden'; so the shapes will not be lost, unless heated.
standard victoria sponge will be fine - lots of recipes out there for that. I wouldnt use Genoise as it's lighter, and possible wont stand up to the job of supporting the cake.
It's quite easy on the decoration part. You will want to use royal icing, which you can roll out (very clean surface) and cut to the right shape for wrapping paper. You then fold the corners in and under the sponge present as you would do with normal wrapping - slightly fiddly but you will get the desired effect. You can get royal icing in many colours.
I would then get some ribbon and tie bows onto the pressies. If you are artistic, you can get some proper food colourings and some paintbrushes and write a message. To make it look even better, try and make a brithday card out of pastillage, and decorate that to go with the pressies.
go to allrecipes.com, this site can help you a lot. good luck and enjoy baking!
in any cook book you will find a victoria all in one cake recipe, you could simply ice eack cake with roll out icing and tie either ribbons or streamers on them as you would any present
you dont have to have them tiered, how about just laying against each other with small empty decorated boxes around so they look like part of a pile of pressies
my mum makes wedding cakes and always uses a madiera cake mix (try a weigh and save shop)
for victoria cake use
6oz flour
6oz of sugar
6oz marg
3 eggs
this will also work
use a rollout icing to get a smooth finish on the cakes. you can colour it using food colouring and when placing the cakes turn each cake slightly so that they look stacked.
your library should be a good source of help.
